I would like to use the possibility to thank everybody who helped me for the completion of my thesis and supported me in science as well in privacy during this time.
First, I would like to thank my supervisor Prof. Dr. Andreas Herrmann who patiently advised me through my PhD study. He was always ready to help, open for questions and offered critical advice. His support, which was not only limited to my scientific work, made it very easy to have a good time in this lab.
I am very much indebted to Dr. Peter Müller. His suggestions, critical comments, helpful hints and in particular, his vast helpfulness and motivational nature stimulated me and was important during my work.
My special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Anant Menon who familiarized me with several techniques. I was pleased to work in his lab, in a very nice environment for several month. I am indebted to Bill Watkins and Dr. Nikola Baumann who welcomed and advised me in Anant's Lab and helped me to survive in Madison. I am likewise thankful to all members of Prof. Menon`s lab and not to forget to B.D. and The Boss, which were different from N.D..
Next, I would like to thank Dr. Matthijs Kol for helpful discussions and hints during my work. I would also thank Karin John and Dr. Astrid Tannert for guiding me through the secrets of mathematical modeling and chemical calculations and for the helpful, stimulating discussions. Sabine Schiller and Bärbel Hillebrecht provided excellent expert technical assistance and never hesitated to help me in almost every situation.
I am indebted to Prof. Dr. Thomas Pomorski and Dr. Thomas Korte who helped me during my work, especially in the final of the thesis.
Ines Aliji definitively supported me to perform the dithionite assay experiments.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the group members of the molecular biophysics work group for their helpfulness and for the relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, I would like to thank the "Thursday-club" for helpful and stimulating experiences.
This thesis would not have been possible without financial aid of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst who paid the expenses arising from the Biophysical Society Conference and the working abidance in Madison.
I am deeply indebted to my parents both for financing my studies and for ensuring that I was given a good education, and above all, for their love.
Finally, I would like to apologize to all those whose contributions to this thesis I have forgotten to mention in the acknowledgement.
