| There has not yet been an extensive empirical comparison about the ways in which monetary unions have been organized in different countries. The current discussions about the introduction of the Euro have focussed attention on this aspect of union formation, which has long been neglected. This paper attempts to elucidate the construction of the Swedish monetary community. It is assumed that the pre-modern mechanisms of intra-community legitimacy endure under the modern guise of the welfare state. The crisis of the welfare state in the 1990s has fostered a return of the discourse of envy and Almqvist’s poverty discourse. |
