Das Projekt Proprint, aus dem heraus ein dauerhafter Dienst zum Print-on-demand für frei verfügbare Dokumente auf
dezentralen Repositorien entwickelt wurde, startete 2000. Ziel war es,
Nutzern eine individualisierte und lokale Druckdienstleistung der Dokumente
anzubieten und gleichzeitig bei den Dokumenteanbietern durch eine zentrale
Prozessierung und Abrechnung der Aufträge den Verwaltungsaufwand zu
minimieren. Inzwischen haben technische Entwicklungen wie standardisierte
Metadaten und Repositorien, verbesserte Harvesting Prozesse, aber auch kleine
und leistungfähige Datenträger sowie ein dichtes Netz von Copyshops mit
Druck- und Bindeangeboten annehmbare Alternativen zu Proprint geschaffen.

The service has stopped to operate by October 2009.
The project proprint aimed at building up and maintain a
print-on-demand service for documents freely available on decentral
repositories started in the year 2000. Its key objective was to offer users
individual and local print-on-demand service and at the same time minimize
administration efforts for the institutions that hosted the repositories with
a central processing and accounting unit. Meanwhile technical developments
such as standardised metadata and repositories, improved harvesting processes
as well as pocket-size high-duty storage devices and a network of well
equipped copyshops with printing and binding facilities offer true
alternatives to the service Proprint.
