This research examines efficiency, functionality and acceptance of a newly-built stationary protection facility for amphibians and small animals in Berlin-Buch. The investigation of this tunnel-and-fence-system was conducted between February and November 2004, revealing the following results: In total 2,901 individuals crossed the passageways, the majority of which were amphibians (2,425). Among them were 1,056 common toads (Bufo bufo), 609 adult und sub-adult moor frogs (Rana arvalis), 222 adult und sub-adult common frogs (Rana temporaria), 268 juvenile brown frogs (Rana arvalis, R. temporaria), 188 edible frogs (Rana kl. esculenta), 82 smooth newts (Triturus vugaris), and 166 grass snakes (Natrix natrix). The protection facility was not only utilised by amphibians, but by reptiles (n = 172) and small mammals (n = 304) as well. This range of species points to a very high degree of acceptance of this facility among small animals (amphibians, reptiles, small mammals). Additionally, the facility's efficiency can be classified as being very high, for 99,2 % of the total amount of animals safely reached the other side of the street. The functionality of the guiding system as well as the gratings and the passageways is rated as high. An influential factor concerning the successful migration of amphibians is the micro-climate (humidity, wind velocity, air and ground temperature) which the stationary facility affects marginally. All in all, the tunnel's (frequent) utilisation has shown that the facility is well-optimised and that all of the passageways have been accepted.
