Abstract

Werden Veröffentlichungen bei Open-Access-Verlagen publiziert und die Publikationskosten vorab von den Autoren oder einer Institution entrichtet, so handelt es sich um den so genannten „Golden Road“ bzw. „Goldenen Weg“. Der Goldene Weg ist auch dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass parallel zur Open-Access-Ausgabe die Publikation meist auch als Druckwerk gegen Kaufpreis angeboten wird. Der so genannte „Grüne Weg“ ist hingegen dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass bereits publizierte Monographien und vor allem Beiträge in Zeitungen und Zeitschriften auf einem Open- Access-Server von Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen gespeichert werden. Die an manchen Orten geführte Diskussion, ob grüner oder goldener Weg der Open-Access-Bewegung besser entspricht, ist kontraproduktiv, da beide Wege notwendig sind und sich sogar sinnvoll ergänzen. So unterschiedlich das Publikationsverhalten der Wissenschaftler, auch im Hinblick auf die natur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Fächer, so unterschiedlich müssen die Wege zu Open Access gestaltet sein. Beide Wege müssen vielmehr dem Bedarf nach freier Verfügbarkeit wissenschaftlich generierter Inhalte entsprechen, die Voraussetzung für effektive und effiziente Forschung ist. Anhand des Verlages Hamburg University Press der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek wird das Geschäftsmodell des Golden Road zu Open Access vorgestellt.

When articles or books are published and the costs are paid in advance by the authors or their sponsoring institutions, the procedure is described as the golden road to open access. A further characteristic is that this open access publication runs parallel to a commercially sold print publication. The so-called green road, in contrast, is the term given to the storage and free access to previously published monographs and articles from newspapers and journals on open access servers of universities and research institutes. The occasional debate as to whether the green or the golden road is more appropriate to the open access movement is, in fact, counterproductive because both methods are necessary and even complementary. Just as scientists follow different styles and habits of publishing, and differences exist between publishing habits within the natu-ral sciences and the humanities, so there also need to be different ways to organize open access publishing. But both roads need to facilitate the unrestricted access to scientific knowledge, which is a prerequisite for effective and efficient research. The Hamburg University Press at the State and University Library of Hamburg is a type of business model exemplifying the golden road of open access.
