The aim of the present study was to find out whether an increase in serum Se levels after supplementing a dairy total mixed ration with organic Se yeast compared to sodium selenite would be reflected in the antioxidant status and some immunological traits in blood from dairy cows. Sixteen Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were allotted to three dietary treatment groups from 6 weeks before to 15 weeks after calving at the experimental station of the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR), Berlin, Germany. The control group (C, n=5) was maintained exclusively on the basal total mixed ration (TMR) containing 0.15-0.2 mg dietary Se/kg DM from the diet ingredients whereas the groups with inorganic selenium source (SeI, sodium selenite, n=5) and the organic bound selenium group (SeY, selenium enriched yeast, n=6) were supplemented with their respective Se sources at 4 mg Se per animal and day in the pre partum period and 6 mg Se per animal and day in the post partum period (~0.5 mg Se/kg DM). Each cow received the supplement individually in the form of 20 or 30 gram premix given after milking. Blood samples were collected at 6 and 3 week before anticipated calving, within 12 hours after calving, 1, and 12 weeks after calving. Serum was harvested and aliquoted for Se and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) measurements. Serum Se concentrations in SeI and SeY groups were different (Peng
