This contribution addresses the challenges for universities implied by recent developments in internet technology from an institutional management and organisational development perspective. The central thesis is that media development has to be seen as a strategic management task in order to realise the full potential of innovation technologies to enhance the core functions of universities. Different strategic options and business models for virtual universities are discussed.
