Das Massenmedium Comic als Marginalbestand im deutschen Bibliothekssystem?

Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, ob das Massenmedium Comic im deutschen Bibliothekssystem immer noch ein „Schattendasein“ führt und einen Marginalbestand in den Bibliotheken darstellt, oder ob sich die Sammlungs- und Erschließungspraktiken verändert haben und man als Leser oder Forscher eine mittlerweile zufrieden stellend aufbereitete Anzahl von Comics vorfindet. Die Basis für die Studie bilden Besuche einzelner Bibliotheken, die Auswertung von Online-Fragebögen und Einzelgespräche mit zentralen Akteuren. Auch die deutschlandweite Organisation des Sammelns steht hierbei auf dem Prüfstand. Dabei lautet die These dieser Arbeit, dass im Vergleich zum Ausland wichtige Entwicklungen zu einem Großteil an den deutschen Bibliotheken – öffentlich wie wissenschaftlich – vorbeigegangen sind: Nach wie vor existiert keine einzige Spezialabteilung für Comics an einer der großen Universalbibliotheken Deutschlands. Verschwindend wenige Bibliotheken verfügen über ein ausgeprägtes Sammelprofil im Bereich Comics, ein Bewusstsein für ihre wissenschaftliche oder gesellschaftliche Bedeutung ist kaum nachzuweisen.

This study examines the situation of comics in the German library system. The analysis focuses on the question whether comic books, graphic novels, and manga are still neglected, marginal media in the library landscape, or if collection building and cataloguing procedures and routines have changed since the 1970s when the comics gained some attention and became remarkable parts of the libraries' collections sufficient to satisfy readers and researchers. The study is based on one hand on visits paid to specific libraries and interviews with librarians dealing with comics in their daily work and on the other hand on an online questionnaire posted in two central librarians' web lists. A further aspect of the research project is the level of national organization of cataloguing and collecting. The main thesis in this paper is, that major developments in the general field of librarianship but also on the specific field of comics librarianship have passed without inducing any further recognition in the treatment of comic books in German libraries, even if comics do appear regularly in public and – to a lesser extent – in academic libraries nowadays: There is no special collection on comics or comic art in any of the big universalistic libraries in Germany. Very few libraries offer a concrete collection development profile for their comic collections. Hardly any library acknowledges and promotes their academic and cultural value for the society. A comparative view on major comic collections in other countries allows a better judgement and offer possible perspectives for the future.
