Natural sanctuaries, and especially sacred caves with their venerable and reverent appearance, constitute an intriguing stage for the reciprocal interaction of nature and civilization. Such sanctuaries are usually found in extra-urban contexts, and are of non-institutionalized, but rural-local in character. However, by studying examples of such sanctuaries located within the polis, like the sacred caves of the Athenian Acropolis, it becomes clear that the elements and rituals ascribed to this type of cult are combined with the mythical associations of the urban topography. The aim of this paper is to topographically and archaeologically approach the cult of Aglauros, positioned on the eastern slope of the Athenian Acropolis and its associated rituals. The ritual aspects of this cult, such as the ephebic oath connected to the inscription found in the Aglaurion, as well as the “ritual of coming of age” performed by the Arrephoroi and related to the nearby Sanctuary of Eros and Aphrodite, are strictly connected to the surrounding topographical and socio-political context. They demonstrate the central role of the sacred caves and furthermore contextualize the polis-related myths and in turn provide a representation of a polis-identity.eng
