The process of transition to democracy in Latvia still has not come to an end. In view of the important role the media has to play in democratic societies the interconnectedness of the media with the political process and societal conditions deserves special attention. Despite the formal declaration of the freedom of the press yet no such has been able to develop in the full sense of the word and no real competition on the market has been established. This article provides an overview of the development of the media in Latvia – with special emphasis laid on the press – since the renewed struggle for independence and discusses some major problems related to the central actors as well as their mutual interaction.eng
