Die Entschädigung von Zwangssterilisierten in Schweden
About 40 percent of the 63.000 sterilizations in Sweden between 1935 and 1975 were conducted by force or a certain degree of social pressure. Until the 1950s people with intellectual disabilities were affected in particular. After an intensive public debate a compensation act was passed in 1999. The law stipulates that people who were sterilized by force or operated on the initiative of a third person have the right to get compensated with about 18.700 Euros each until the end of 2002. Based on that about 1.600 people have been compensated by a single payment.
