This paper reviews the dramatic and widely noted developments in the German labor market in the past decade and surveys the most plausible reasons for these changes. Alternative hypotheses are compared and contrasted. I argue that the labor market reforms associated with the Agenda 2010 – the Hartz reforms – played a role at least as great as that of increasing flexibility of wage determination and the allocation of hours across workers. Until 2010, the German economic miracle could be accounted for by an expansion of part-time work, which has since been supplanted by a sustained expansion of full-time employment. Supported by wage flexibility in this segment, part-time employment represents an important new margin of flexibility in the German labor market.

We calculate the instantaneous firing rate of a stochastic integrate-and-fire neuron driven by an arbitrary time-dependent signal up to second order in the signal amplitude. For cosine signals, this weakly nonlinear theory reveals: (i) a frequency-dependent change of the time-averaged firing rate reminiscent of frequency locking in deterministic oscillators; (ii) higher harmonics in the rate that may exceed the linear response; (iii) a strong nonlinear response to two cosines even when the response to a single cosine is linear. We also measure the second-order response numerically for a neuron model with excitable voltage dynamics and channel noise, and find a strong similarity to the second-order response that we obtain analytically for the leaky integrate-and-fire model. Finally, we illustrate how the transition of neural dynamics from the linear rate response regime to a mode-locking regime is captured by the second-order response. Our results highlight the importance and robustness of the weakly nonlinear regime in neural dynamics.

To investigate the imaging performance of an elastin-specific molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probe with respect to the extracellular matrix (ECM) in an experimental hepatic cancer model. Twelve rabbits with hepatic VX2 tumors were examined using 3 T MRI 14, 21, and 28 days after tumor implantation for two subsequent days (gadobutrol, day 1; elastin-specific probe, day 2). The relative enhancement (RE) of segmented tumor regions (central and margin) and the peritumoral matrix was calculated using pre-contrast and delayed-phase T1w sequences. MRI measurements were correlated to histopathology and element-specific and spatially resolved mass spectrometry (MS). Mixed-model analysis was performed to assess the performance of the elastin-specific probe. In comparison to gadobutrol, the elastin probe showed significantly stronger RE, which was pronounced in the tumor margin (day 14–28: P ≤ 0.007). In addition, the elastin probe was superior in discriminating between tumor regions (χ2(4) = 65.87; P < 0.001). MRI-based measurements of the elastin probe significantly correlated with the ex vivo elastinstain (R = .84; P <0 .001) and absolute gadolinium concentrations (ICP-MS: R = .73, P <0 .01). LA-ICP-MS imaging confirmed the colocalization of the elastin-specific probe with elastic fibers. Elastin-specific molecular MRI is superior to non-specific gadolinium-based contrast agents in imaging the ECM of hepatic tumors and the peritumoral tissue.

There exist recommendations but also controversies about the necessity and effectiveness of a distinctive melanoma follow-up programme. Melanoma is one of the fastest increasing malignant tumours with increasing rates of incidence and mortality. In this work new strategies are implemented in a pre-existing melanoma follow-up schedule in order to ameliorate the care for patients, the detection of metastases and the relapse-free and overall survival rates. In a large prospective study taking four years the ultrasound of lymph nodes, soft tissues and in transit distances was shown to earlier detect recurrences than the clinical examination thus significantly enhancing recurrence-free and overall survival. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been performed in a large, worldwide leading study to verify the suspected lesions in a nearly non-invasive way. High percentages in sensitivity and specificity could be achieved also in small lesions or lesions in an unfavourable localization. The latter lesions have been shown to be better detectable by a marking procedure. An anchor wire has been sonographically placed within such a lesion to improve the successful excision. A further study examined the value of serial RT-PCR testing from peripheral blood in melanoma patients. Patients, who have been tested at least once positive, had a higher risk ratio to die disease-specifically from melanoma. This result has been highly significant. RT-PCR examinations could also be applied in small amounts of material such as fine needle aspirations or material of FNA C of the sentinel node. All modalities could be proven to be effective and therefore are included in the melanoma follow-up programme of the Charité, Humboldt University of Berlin.

Few studies refer to ecological differences of genetically close and morphologically almost identical insectivorous bat species. However, this information is indispensable for effective and sustainable nature conservation strategies. This study aims at investigating differences in the spatial ecology of the long-eared bat species Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus in a typical cultural landscape of Brandenburg, where the two species occur sympatrically. The reconstruction of the prey spectrum revealed that P. auritus and P. austriacus strongly overlapped in their diet. Our results suggest that resource partitioning is based on using different foraging habitats. While radio-tracked females of P. auritus were strongly associated with woodland patches resulting in small-scale activity areas of only few square kilometers, activity areas of P. austriacus encompassed a large-scale matrix of grassland habitats in the magnitude of a small town. Based on these results, we identify priority conservation needs for the two species to ensure that these differences in the spatial behavior and habitat use can be adequately taken into account for future nature conservation efforts.
Abstract
Movement behavior and habitat use of the long-eared bat species Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus were studied in the Havelland region in Brandenburg (Germany). Data collection included mist-netting, radiotelemetry, reconstruction of prey items, and monitoring of roosting sites. Body measurements confirm a high degree of phenotypic similarity between the two species. Total activity areas (100% Minimum Convex Polygons, MCPS) of Plecotus austriacus (2828.3 ± 1269.43 ha) were up to five-fold larger compared to Plecotus auritus (544.54 ± 295.89 ha). The activity areas of Plecotus austriacus contained up to 11 distinct core areas, and their mean total size (149.7 ± 0.07 ha) was approximately three-fold larger compared to core areas of Plecotus auritus (49.2 ± 25.6 ha). The mean distance between consecutive fixes per night was 12.72 ± 3.7 km for Plecotus austriacus and 4.23 ± 2.8 km for Plecotus auritus. While Plecotus austriacus was located most frequently over pastures (>40%) and meadows (>20%), P. auritus was located mostly within deciduous (>50%) and mixed forests (>30%) in close vicinity to its roosts. Roost site monitoring indicates that the activity of P. austriacus is delayed relative to P. auritus in spring and declined earlier in autumn. These phenological differences are probably related to the species’ respective diets. Levins’ measure of trophic niche breadth suggests that the prey spectrum for P. auritus is more diverse during spring (B = 2.86) and autumn (B = 2.82) compared to P. austriacus (spring: B = 1.7; autumn: B = 2.1). Our results give reason to consider these interspecific ecological variations and species-specific requirements of P. auritus and P. austriacus to develop adapted and improved conservation measures.

Some commentators have condemned Kant's moral project from a feminist perspective based on Kant's apparently dim view of women as being innately morally deficient. Here I will argue that although his remarks concerning women are unsettling at first glance, a more detailed and closer examination shows that Kant's view of women is actually far more complex and less unsettling than that attributed to him by various feminist critics. My argument, then, undercuts the justification for the severe feminist critique of Kant's moral project.

The investigated ferecrystals are novel layered intergrowth compounds consisting of m monolayers of niobium diselenide (NbSe2) stacked repeatedly with n atomic bilayers of lead selenide (PbSe) or tin selenide (SnSe). Bulk NbSe2 is a layered compound showing superconductivity. Due to their artificially atomic-scale layered structure, which is tunable on the atomic scale, ferecrystals can serve as model systems for layered superconductors. In this study, their structural and electrical properties are investigated. Using transmission electron microscopy their turbostratically disordered, nanocrystalline structure is revealed. The atomic structure within the individual layers is similar as for bulk NbSe2, PbSe and SnSe, with the crystallographic c-axes parallel to the stacking direction in the ferecrystals. A quantitative analysis using a two-layer model fit for the electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient and magnetoresistance yields a similar carrier type, density and mobility in the NbSe2 layers as reported for isolated NbSe2 monolayers. These values differ from those of bulk NbSe2. For the first time, a normal-to-superconducting transition has been detected in ferecrystals. The transition temperatures of the ferecrystals are reduced to about a half of those of analogous non-disordered misfit layer compounds. This reduction in transition temperature can be correlated to the turbostratic disorder in ferecrystals. The ratio between the cross-plane Ginzburg-Landau coherence length and the cross-plane distance between the NbSe2 layers for the ferecrystals is lower than for non-disordered misfit layer compounds, making ferecrystals promising candidates for (quasi-)two-dimensional superconductors.

The question of the contested nature of the concept of democracy is neither in doubt within the political science debate, nor new. What is new, however, is the attention paid to the knowledge of competing ideas of democracy in literature. The development of concepts of the “D-word” beyond Eurocentric hegemony was accompanied by a critical review of methodological approaches. Against the background of these methodological challenges, the requirements for more differentiated or mixed methodological approaches are discussed in the literature. In this article, a combined approach of the repertory grid and the semantic differential methods is proposed to enrich the innovative methodological dynamics of investigating the meaning of democracy. The article gives an introduction to the repertory grid method and illustrates, with a case study, how the Singaporean middle-class views democracy. These repertory grid face-to-face interviews serve as a starting point for the creation of valid polarity profiles for the semantic differential method—a method which, like the repertory grid, is used to measure the connotative or affective meaning of objects, but in a quantitative design so that representativeness can be achieved. Through this approach, the constructivist approach of repertory grid is partly combined with positivistic survey research, and thus the approach is inductive with deductive research.

Aims: To study circulating levels and distribution of adiponectin multimers [low molecular weight (LMW)-, medium molecular weight (MMW)- and high molecular weight (HMW)-adiponectin] in preterm and full-term infants. Methods: Total serum adiponectin and its multimers were measured in 40 healthy infants at the age of one month and associations with anthropometric parameters [body weight and length, body mass index (BMI)], weight gain and metabolic indices (glucose, insulin) were examined. Twenty of the infants were born preterm (gestational age 33.2±1.6 weeks). Results: LMW-adiponectin level and its fractional ratio to total adiponectin were significantly higher in full-term than in preterm infants (P<0.001 and P<0.01, respectively), whereas, MMW-adiponectin level and its ratio were significantly lower (P=0.03 and P=0.01, respectively). HMW-adiponectin did not differ significantly between full-term and preterm infants and accounted for almost 60% of total adiponectin levels in both groups. HMW-adiponectin, but not MMW adiponectin or LMW adiponectin, correlated significantly with anthropometric measurements, similarly to total adiponectin; in addition, HMW adiponectin correlated significantly with weight gain. Conclusions: HMW adiponectin is the most prevalent form in infants. Circulating levels and distribution of MMW- and LMW-adiponectin differ between full-term and preterm infants, but the role of these adiponectin multimers needs to be studied further.

This thesis is surveying the effect of Biochar from water hyacinth on the water holding capacity of a Ferralsol soil. At the beginning the Butare area in Rwanda is described, as a possible place for an implementation of the measure. Thereby the focus is set on socioeconomic, climatic and soil conditions. Than a description of Biochar and its effects on soil, and an overview of the water hyacinth with its extraordinary biomass production are given. Both considerations merge to the question, if water hyacinth can serve as a feedstock for Biochar production and how such a Biochar could effect the soil water holding capacity. This is answered by an experiment: water hyacinth is collected from lake Victoria and pyrolysed to Biochar. This Biochar is added in concentrations of 1.5%, 2% and 3% to the local Ferralsol soil. For a better understanding of the Ferralsol soil its grain size distribution is estimated applying the Köhn sedimentation procedure and laser diffraction. The Biochar amended soil is saturated with water and relocated for drainage. After two days the samples are weighed and thus their water content at water holding capacity determined. The experiment resulted in an increase in water holding capacity of 11%, respectively 14% and 26%.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all life on earth and it is thus needed in agricultural production. Today’s globalized and intensified agricultural production has led to the dependency on P inputs which are fed by phosphate rock, being a finite resource. In contrast, excessive P is a major driver in eutrophication. To sustain agricultural production, there is a need to address this problem. The aim of this thesis was to identify points at which P management could be improved for the region Berlin-Brandenburg. To analyze the system and screen for improvement, a substance flow analysis (SFA) for P for the year 2011 was compiled and for crop production the years 2005-2012 were analyzed. Also, data from 119 farms was obtained by a letter survey and relations between farm structural factors and soil test P (STP) were drawn. The results showed a negative balance for agricultural soils (-3,617 t P) and a considerable recycling potential in waste (933 t P) and wastewater (3,921 t P). Mineral fertilizer inputs amounted to 4,447 t P. P removal by crops was 15,283 t without straw and residues, being almost as low as in 2006; the year with the lowest removal by main crops. P removal by harvest varied significantly (7,069 t P/yr from 2005 to 2013) and depended on the performance of main crops which in turn is influenced by weather and soil. As a result of this, climate change may interact significantly with P flows in agriculture. Here, important variables are connected to conditions in P uptake and plant growth in general (e.g. water supply and temperature). The analyses of farms in the region showed that individual farms of small to medium size had more land with (very) high STP. Larger partnerships and companies/cooperatives were susceptible to factors causing low STP. Tenancy, grassland, extensive cattle and stockless organic farming had a lowering effect on STP. Biogas plants and intensive (cattle) farming, partly combined, were connected to a rise in STP.

The ongoing entanglement of digitization and labour requires deeper analysis and research from ethnographic scholars. Perspectives from both scholarship investigating digitization of everyday life, and that focusing on labour culture, must be combined in order to lay the foundations for new critical labour culture research informed by media and digital anthropology. Labour, we suggest, is not only affected by digitization, but facilitates this, and operates within the digital. Therefore, we argue that there are three frameworks through which to approach phenomena related to digitization and labour: (1) digitized labour culture research, which focuses on the role of the working subject; (2) digitizing labour culture research, which focuses on the production of digital transformations; and (3) digital labour culture research, which focuses on labour that takes place within the digital.

Cycling has gained increasing interest in Germany in recent years due to its manifold environmental, societal, and economic benefits. However, the number of cyclist collisions resulting in injury or death remains high and little is known about regional variations in frequency, severity of injury, and type of collision. This study investigates spatial and temporal patterns and characteristics of cyclist collisions across Germany in 2019. Using a detailed cyclist collision dataset for most German federal states, we identified statistically significant regional differences in frequency, severity of injury, and type of collision. To facilitate this and future cyclist collision surveillance studies in Germany, we developed and published a custom R package to download and combine the collision data with geographical data. Our analysis reveals that densely populated regions exhibit higher collision rates and a higher share of collisions involving turns, but lower severity of injuries and a lower share of collisions whilst driving in a straight line, a higher collision frequency during the work week compared to weekends, and a higher collision frequency peak during morning rush hour. We also observed a markedly high share of fatal bicycle-truck collisions in densely populated regions. In contrast, rural regions show lower collision rates, but a higher share of severe collisions, a higher share of collisions whilst driving in a straight line, as well as higher collision frequencies during weekends and summer months. Our findings underscore the complex and multifaceted geographical variations in collisions involving cyclists. The results of this study suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach to collision prevention infrastructure and policy may be insufficient for addressing variations in risk, and that future efforts to improve cyclist safety should be tailored to the local geographical context.

Background: Assuming that the mechanisms inducing adaptation in healthy tendons yield similar responses in tendinopathic tendons, we hypothesized that a high-loading exercise protocol that increases tendon stiffness and cross-sectional area in male healthy Achilles tendons may also induce comparable beneficial adaptations in male tendinopathic Achilles tendons in addition to improving pain and function.
Objectives: We investigated the effectiveness of high-loading exercise in Achilles tendinopathy in terms of inducing mechanical (tendon stiffness, maximum strain), material (Young’s modulus), morphological (tendon cross-sectional area (CSA)), maximum voluntary isometric plantar flexor strength (MVC) as well as clinical adaptations (Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment—Achilles (VISA-A) score and pain (numerical rating scale (NRS))) as the primary outcomes. As secondary outcomes, drop (DJ) and counter-movement jump (CMJ) height and intratendinous vascularity were assessed.
Methods: We conducted a controlled clinical trial with a 3-month intervention phase. Eligibility criteria were assessed by researchers and medical doctors. Inclusion criteria were male sex, aged between 20 and 55 years, chronic Achilles tendinopathy confirmed by a medical doctor via ultrasound-assisted assessment, and a severity level of less than 80 points on the VISA-A score. Thirty-nine patients were assigned by sequential allocation to one of three parallel arms: a high-loading intervention (training at ~ 90% of the MVC) (n = 15), eccentric exercise (according to the Alfredson protocol) as the standard therapy (n = 15) and passive therapy (n = 14). Parameters were assessed pre- and-post-intervention. Data analysis was blinded.
Results: Primary outcomes: Plantar flexor MVC, tendon stiffness, mean CSA and maximum tendon strain improved only in the high-loading intervention group by 7.2 ± 9.9% (p = 0.045), 20.1 ± 20.5% (p = 0.049), 8.98 ± 5.8% (p < 0.001) and −12.4 ± 10.3% (p = 0.001), respectively. Stiffness decreased in the passive therapy group (−7.7 ± 21.2%; p = 0.042). There was no change in Young’s modulus in either group (p > 0.05). The VISA-A score increased in all groups on average by 19.8 ± 15.3 points (p < 0.001), while pain (NRS) dropped by −0.55 ± 0.9 points (p < 0.001). Secondary outcomes: CMJ height decreased for all groups (−0.63 ± 4.07 cm; p = 0.005). There was no change in DJ height and vascularity (p > 0.05) in either group.
Conclusion: Despite an overall clinical improvement, it was exclusively the high-loading intervention that induced significant mechanical and morphological adaptations of the plantar flexor muscle–tendon unit. This might contribute to protecting the tendon from strain-induced injury. Thus, we recommend the high-loading intervention as an effective (alternative) therapeutic protocol in Achilles tendinopathy rehabilitation management in males.

Peracetic acid (PAA) has been recently introduced to aquaculture as a sustainable disinfectant. It has great advantages over conventional disinfectants by having high effectiveness and low environmental impact at very low concentrations (around 1 mg L-1). The application of PAA in aquaculture facilities is realized by adding PAA products to the rearing water. This leads to unavoidable exposure of fish and microorganisms (surface-attached and waterborne) to PAA. Consequently, a potential impact of PAA on fish health and microbial activities is expected. This potential impact, however, has been poorly studied. In aquaculture practice, two strategies are broadly used to apply PAA: short term high dose (1-2 mg L-1 PAA) periodic/pulse applications or continuous low dose (≤ 0.2 mg L-1 PAA) application related to the makeup water flow. The potential difference between these two strategies remains unclear, especially concerning their impacts on fish health and water quality.
In the present study, the impact of PAA on fish health and microbial activities was tested in identical flow-through systems controlled with optimal water quality. Rainbow trout was selected as the model fish. Various parameters of stress, oxidative stress, growth, gill histology and innate cellular/humoral immunity were measured to indicate fish health. Oxygen, pH and visible biofilm formation were continuously monitored to interpret changes of microbial activities. In addition, the application strategies, biweekly pulse applications of 1 mg L-1 PAA in the rearing water and the continuous application of 0.2 mg L-1 PAA in the inflow, were compared.
The results indicate that pulse applications of 1 mg L-1 PAA stressed the naïve fish during the first exposure, while the continuous application not. Fish could progressively adapt to PAA-induced stress, as indicated by less intensive behavioral reaction, reduced cortisol release and unaffected response to another stressor. Although the exposure to PAA induced slight hyperplasia in fish gill, the growth and innate immunity were affected, indicating unaffected overall health. PAA induced oxidative stress in fish, regardless of the application strategies. In response, fish enhanced their antioxidative defense, especially in gill and serum, to scavenge excessive free radicals induced by exposure to PAA. Despite of extremely low PAA concentration measured during the continuous application, the constant input of PAA induced a constant mild oxidative stress to fish. In contrast, the oxidative stress induced by pulse 1 mg L-1 PAA applications was periodic present. Consequently, fish had periodic recovery phases when the pulse PAA applications were absent. The lack of recovery phases in fish exposed to the continuous PAA application resulted in a significant reduction of antiprotease activity in serum. This implies a potential risk of chronic inflammation.
The antimicrobial effect of PAA depended on applied concentration. The pulse applications of 1 mg L-1 PAA strongly inhibit microbial activities by inducing a strong oxidative stress. As a result, the biofilm in fish tanks was nearly erased, and the microbial oxygen consumption and nitrification were inhibited. In contrast, the PAA concentration during the continuous application was so low that only a minor antimicrobial effect was observed. In addition, the degradation products, acetic acid and acetate, were beneficial for the biofilm formation by providing organic carbon. The enhanced biofilm may become a potential risk by providing protective shed for opportunistic pathogens. Due to the strong antimicrobial effect and low risk to affect fish health, it’s recommended to apply PAA periodic at high concentrations (1-2 mg L-1) with sufficient intervals.
The impact of PAA on fish health and water quality was also tested in a mirror carp recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) challenged with bad water quality. The challenge of bad water quality was realized by transient water stops in fish tanks. Simultaneous to the transient water stops, PAA at 1 mg L-1 was applied. The stress, gill histology and innate cellular immunity were compared in fish with or without simultaneous PAA treatments. The transient water stops caused a 6-fold increase of heterotrophic bacterial density in water, while the simultaneous PAA treatments caused a 90% decrease of heterotrophic bacterial density. The strong antibacterial effect of PAA significantly improved the gill health of fish, and effectively prevented bacterial infections, which were short-term present in fish exposed to transient water stops alone.
To sum up, PAA applied periodically at 1-2 mg L-1 in optimal water quality is effective to maintain the water quality at a low cost of scarifying fish health. In production-scale aquaculture facilities, where the water quality is often deteriorated by high stocking density and organic load, regular applications of PAA are especially beneficial to enhance fish health and prevent potential infections.

Priority setting in agricultural research is a complex decision making problem due to the inherent uncertainty surrounding the impact of research activities and the multiple social and economic research objectives under which research institutions in developing countries have to operate. This study attempts to apply formal and quantitative evaluation and decision making methods for a more rigorous and explicit analysis of the uncertainty and multiple research objectives. These methods are illustrated by applying them to a priority setting exercise for the National Dairy Research Program of the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) conducted in 1996. A set of 19 planned dairy research projects was proposed and specified by KARI scientists and the economic impact assessed based on a stochastic evaluation framework using economic surplus methods and Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that comparing these projects by stochastic dominance criteria with respect to the expected net present value and cost-benefit ratio the final rank order is very much subject to assumed risk preferences of the decision- makers. Thus, decision advice on the type of prioritised projects for implementation and fund raising is much less clear-cut than a deterministic evaluation would suggest. Mathematical programming techniques were applied to analyse the trade-off between multiple research objectives, to examine the distributional consequences of research, and to explore how different risk strategies (from risk aversion to risk proneness) would affect the selection of a optimal research portfolio from the planned dairy research projects. Although risk has a strong bearing on the composition of a research portfolio for various different funding levels the economic implications are not significant in terms of net present value. In a Multiple-objective programming framework the trade-off between efficiency and equity was examined. Equity concern was looked at two different angles: first, by a spatial distribution of the research benefits, and second by the distributions among consumer and producer groups. Results show a limited scope of directing the dairy research plan either for the sake of consumers or producers while the scope of targeting different production zones in Kenya is much larger although the trade-offs in terms of foregone welfare between different zones are very pronounced.

This study examined absolute and relative judgment accuracies of German early childhood (EC) teachers with respect to the mathematical skills of the children under their supervision. The two types of judgment accuracies are crucial prerequisites for pacing activities in EC education and offering differentiated educational activities adapted to individual skill levels of children. Data from 39 EC teachers and 268 children were analyzed using multilevel modeling. Teachers rated the skills of children on a structured observation instrument (“Kinder Diagnose Tool,” KiDiT). Children were assessed on their mathematical skills with a standardized test (“Mathematische Basiskompetenzen im Kindesalter,” MBK-0). On average, 65% of the variation in judgments of teachers on the KiDiT could be explained by MBK-0 scores of children, which suggest that teachers are—on average—able to rank children within their groups. Teachers were also able to judge the mathematical level of skills of children as assessed by the MBK-0. Neither mathematical content knowledge (MCK) of teachers nor their mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) or general pedagogical knowledge (GPK) moderated the relationship between judgments of teachers and test scores of children or the relationship between the level of the judgments and the level of test scores. Conclusions for future research and practice are drawn.

In recent years, Taiwan has firmly committed itself to pursue the green energy transition and a nuclear-free homeland by 2025, with an increase in renewable energy from 5% in 2016 to 20% in 2025. Offshore wind power (OWP) has become a sustainable and scalable renewable energy source in Taiwan. Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) is a fundamental tool to organize the use of the ocean space by different and often conflicting multi-users within ecologically sustainable boundaries in the marine environment. MSP is capable of definitively driving the use of offshore renewable energy. Lessons from Germany and the UK revealed that MSP was crucial to the development of OWP. This paper aims to evaluate how MSP is able to accommodate the exploitation of OWP in Taiwan and contribute to the achievement of marine policy by proposing a set of recommendations. It concludes that MSP is emerging as a solution to be considered by government institutions to optimize the multiple use of the ocean space, reduce conflicts and make use of the environmental and economic synergies generated by the joint deployment of OWP facilities and fishing or aquaculture activities for the conservation and protection of marine environments.

Spectral geometry deals with the question which geometric properties of a space are determined by the spectrum of its Laplace operator. The work at hand is an introduction to the spectral geometry of good orbifolds (as a generalization of Riemannian manifolds) and contains an extensive study of a pair of isospectral flat orbifolds with different maximal isotropy orders. Moreorever, other examples of isospectral non-isometric flat orbifolds are given.

Bordering situates immigrant sex workers at the margins of an already marginalised industry and naturalises the legal conditions of their dispossession and precarity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Berlin, we offer a situated intersectional analysis of the everyday bordering experiences of Muslim trans*immigrant sex workers from Bulgaria (hereafter TISWs). Focusing on three interactional contexts – minority belonging within EU and German politics, encounters with medicolegal institutions, and the new sex work regulation in Germany – our study demonstrates both that everyday bordering experiences derive not solely from national border enforcement and citizenship regulation but also from intersectional sociocultural barriers imposed by non-state actors, while the internal bordering practices of the German state exacerbate the exclusion and marginalisation of sex/gender transgressive people and sex work. We conclude that despite their physical existence as EU citizens in Berlin, TISWs’ everyday bordering experiences require a more nuanced understanding of intersectional systems of oppression which postpones TISWs’ arrival in Berlin indefinitely.

Time Spent on School-Related Activities at Home During the Pandemic: A Longitudinal Analysis of Social Group Inequality Among Secondary School Students

Substantial educational inequalities have been documented in Germany for decades. In this article, we examine whether educational inequalities among children have increased or remained the same since the school closures of spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our perspective is longitudinal: We compare the amount of time children in secondary schools spent on school-related activities at home before the pandemic, during school closures, and immediately after returning to in-person learning. We operationalize family socio-economic status using the highest parental educational attainment. Based on the theoretical assumption that the pandemic affected everyone equally, we formulate a hypothesis of equalization during the first period of school closures. For the period thereafter, however, we assume that parents with a low level of education had more difficulties bearing the additional burden of supervising and supporting their children’s learning activities. Thus, for that period, we postulate an increase in educational inequality. To study our hypotheses, we use data from the 2019 wave of the SOEP and the SOEP-CoV study, both of which are probability samples. The SOEP-CoV study provides a unique database, as it was conducted during the lockdown of spring 2020 and in the following month. For statistical analysis, we use probit regressions at three measurement points (in 2019, in 2020 during the school closures, and in the month after closures). The comparison of these three time points makes our analysis and findings unique in the research on education during the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular with regard to Germany-wide comparisons. Our results confirm the hypothesis of equalization during the first school closures and the hypothesis of an increase in educational in the subsequent period. Our findings have direct policy implications regarding the need to further expand support systems for children.

The unit commitment problem in a power generation system comprising thermal and pumped-storage hydro units is adressed. A large-scale mixed-integer optimization model for unit commitment in a real power system is developed and solved by primal and dual approaches. Both solution methods employ state-of-the-art algorithms and software. Results of test runs are reported.

Demand for agricultural exports in Brazil has stimulated the expansion of crop production and cattle raising, which has caused environmental impacts. In response, Brazil developed public policies such as the new Forest Code (FC) and supply chain arrangements such the Soy and the Cattle Moratoriums. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of these policies, considering the trajectories of agricultural expansion in the state of Mato Grosso in three years: 2005 (pre-moratorium and before the new FC), 2010 (post-moratorium and before the new FC) and 2017 (post-moratorium and post-new FC). Our analysis uses a detailed land use change data for both the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Mato Grosso. In all the years considered, soybean expansion occurred in consolidated production areas and by conversion of pastures. Pasture expansion is influenced by existence of pastures nearby, by areas of secondary vegetation and deforestation. Our data and models show the effectiveness of public policies and private arrangements to reduce direct conversion from forests to crop production. However, our results also provide evidence that soybean expansion has caused indirect impacts by replacing pasture areas and causing pasture expansion elsewhere. Evidence from our work indicates that Brazil needs broader-ranging land use policies than what was done in the 2010s to be able to reach the land use goals stated in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement.

Measuring changes in preferences and perception due to the entry of a new brand with choice data

ddc:330
Context effects can have a major influence on brand choice behavior after the introduction of a new product. Based on behavioral literature, several hypotheses about the effects of a new brand on perception, preferences and choice behavior can be derived, but studies with real choice data are still lacking. We employ an internal market structure analysis to measure context effects caused by a new product in scanner panel data, and to discriminate between alternative theoretical explanations. An empirical investigation reveals strong support for categorization effects and changes in perception, which affect customers in two out of five segments.

In systems biology experiments and mathematical modeling are going hand in hand to gain and increase understanding of cellular processes like metabolism, gene expression, or signaling pathways. While molecular biology investigates single isolated parts and molecular mechanisms of cellular processes, systems biology aims at unraveling the whole process and ultimately whole organisms. Today the availability of comprehensive high-throughput data and computational power paved the way to increase the size of analyzed systems to reach the cellular level. This thesis presents the first whole-cell model (WCM) of a eukaryotic cell, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This established model organism is the perfect candidate for the implementation of a holistic model based on the available experimental data and the accumulated biological knowledge. The project is split into three parts: i) The creation of a modular functional-complete whole-cell model, combining the processes cell cycle, gene expression, metabolism, transport, and growth. ii) The implementation of a specialized simulation environment and a database to support module creation, simulation, and parameterization. iii) The elicitation of experimental data by conducting an experiment to achieve a comprehensive data set for parameterization, combining growth, metabolic, proteomic, and transcriptomic data. The presented work provides not only a simple mathematical model but also addresses challenges occurring during the development of whole-cell models and names possible solutions and new methodologies required for the creation of WCMs.

During World War II Iceland was one of the few nations occupied by Western allied forces. On May the 10th 1940 British Royal Marines landed in Reykjavík to present a fait accompli to the Icelandic government, which had turned down earlier British requests for cooperation and thus provision of naval sites for the British navy. The historian Donald F. Bittner came to the conclusion that the decision to land British forces in Iceland was made under the impression, based on pre-war and war intelligence conducted by British services and experiences in Scandinavia, that the Germans might strike in Iceland. On these grounds in addition to own strategically needs, the British diplomatic and military services were committed to forestall a German coup and pressed for the occupation of Iceland. In this article the decision-making process that led to the British action is reassessed. As a result Bittner's conclusion is challenged. This article argues that the threat of an imminent German attack and occupation of Iceland was manufactured solely to justify the British military occupation of Iceland for British military strategic purposes.

The famous German excavations between 1906 and 1908 of Elephantine Island in Egypt produced some of the most important Aramaic sources for understanding the history of Judeans and Arameans living in 5th century BCE Egypt under Persian occupation. Unknown to the world, many papyri fragments from those excavations remained uncatalogued in the Berlin Museum. In New Aramaic Papyri from Elephantine in Berlin James D. Moore edits the remaining legible Aramaic fragments, which belong to letters, contracts, and administrative texts.

This study compares the feasibility of calculating the masses and the inner volumes the of right and left heart ventricles in 36 patients (15 female and 21 male, ages between 24 and 82 years, mean 54 years) with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE, HP SONOS 1500 with a rotating 5Mhz transducer) and cardiac MRI (1,5Tesla whole body MRI, ACS Philips with a Synergy Cardiac Coil, T1-Turbo Gradient Echo). We want to compare both methods in calculating the inner volumes, the septal and the free myocardial masses in endsystolic and enddiastolic phases as well as the ejection fraction (EF) and the stroke volume (SV) in ventricles with sinusrhythm (n=26) and with atrial fibrillation (n=18). Both methods are evaluated by a disc-summation method from a mean value of four different measurement. The statistic analysis is done with a Bland-Altmann-Plot. The T-test shows no significant difference between big and small or right and left ventricular masses, but it shows a significant difference in the measured data of ventricles with sinusrhythm and those with atrail fibrillation. A subgroup analysis is performed on the latter. The standard error of mean and the systemic mistake of the inner- and myocardial-volumes differ about double the size with ventricles in atrial fibrillation from those with sinusrhythm. The septal volumes show no differences in both subgroups. The endsystolic measurements are about equal from those in the enddiastolic phase. The EF and the SV have equal standard error of means and systemic mistakes in both subgroups of sinusrhythm and atrial fibrillation. In conclusion both methods are equally reliable in the volumetric measurement of ventricles with sinusrhythm and atrial fibrillation, because the absolute value differs just a few milliliters.

Over recent years, study on risk management has been prompted by the Basel committeefor regular banking supervisory. There are however limitations of some widely-used riskmanagement methods that either calculate risk measures under the Gaussian distributional assumption or involve numerical difficulty. The primary aim of this paper is to present a realistic and fast method, GHICA, which overcomes the limitations in multivariate risk analysis. The idea is to first retrieve independent components (ICs) out of the observed high-dimensional time series and then individually and adaptively fit the resulting ICs in the generalized hyperbolic (GH) distributional framework. For the volatility estimation of each IC, the local exponential smoothing technique is used to achieve the best possible accuracy of estimation. Finally, the fast Fourier transformation technique is used to approximate the density of the portfolio returns. The proposed GHICA method is applicable to covariance estimation as well. It is compared with the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) method based on the simulated data with d = 50 GH distributed components. We further implement the GHICA method to calculate risk measures given 20-dimensional German DAX portfolios and a dynamic exchange rate portfolio. Several alternative methods are considered as well to compare the accuracy of calculation with the GHICA one.

ddc:510
We consider nonlinear reaction systems satisfying mass-action kinetics with slow and fast reactions. It is known that the fast-reaction-rate limit can be described by an ODE with Lagrange multipliers and a set of nonlinear constraints that ask the fast reactions to be in equilibrium. Our aim is to study the limiting gradient structure which is available if the reaction system satisfies the detailed-balance condition. The gradient structure on the set of concentration vectors is given in terms of the relative Boltzmann entropy and a cosh-type dissipation potential. We show that a limiting or effective gradient structure can be rigorously derived via EDP-convergence, i.e. convergence in the sense of the energy-dissipation principle for gradient flows. In general, the effective entropy will no longer be of Boltzmann type and the reactions will no longer satisfy mass-action kinetics.

The article deals with the question, how structured building documentation contributes to ecological sustainability. This will be examined in relation to library buildings. A systematic documentation, over the complete life-cycle of a building, is not only an important basis for communication for those involved in the planning process, but also for considering the preservation of a building’s sustainable quality. Structured information about the planning process and facility management could be used later for modernization and reorganization projects. On the one hand there is the planning and building process, but sustainable operation is also a deciding factor – therefore perspectives of the HOAI (Honorarordnung für Architekten und Ingenieure [Fees Tariff for Architects and Engineers] ) and GEFMA (German Facility Management Association) will be carefully considered. It will be shown how the GEFMA guideline 198-1 Facility Management Documentation can be used for a holistic documentation of library buildings. This guideline provides an exact framework and structure for a lifecycle- oriented documentation and serves as a practice guide for the determination of procedure models and a data-management structure. Because of references to a variety of existing documentation norms, guidelines and supplementary notes, this guideline can be used as a reference book. To judge sustainability, certificates from sustainability certification systems outline the particular characteristics of energy efficient and sustainable buildings. Before a building receives a certificate, not only numerous requirements must be fulfilled but also complete documentation of information on the building must be provided.

This thesis addresses the question of what conceptual framework is adequate for private international law in the light of modern developments. “Classic” private international law conceives of “the Law” as necessarily being issued by a state entity, as a consequence of which systems of private international law so far have been conceptually limited to the realm of national law systems. The developments of recent decades, however, show that social reality transcends governmental and territorial determinations with the creation of functionally differentiated sectors regardless of territorial boundaries. According to my argumentation, globalization entails global regulation necessities outside of the traditional national systems of law. In order to adequately meet the requirements of this new reality, private international law should be conceived of as an overarching system which comprises the national systems as mere subsystems. The consequences of this new perspective are being analyzed with regard to the problem of the application of "foreign" law.

Many companies depend on weather conditions, so they require reliable weather forecasts for production planning or risk hedging. In this article, we propose a new way of gaining weather forecasts by exploiting the forward-looking information included in the market prices of weather derivatives traded at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). For this purpose, the CME futures prices of two monthly temperature indices relevant for the energy sector are compared with index forecasts derived from meteorological temperature forecasts. It turns out that the market prices generally outperform the meteorological forecasts in predicting the outcome of the monthly index. Hence, companies whose profit strongly depends on these indices, such as energy companies, can profit from this additional information source about future weather.

Funerary lament and ritual weeping are multi-sensorial public expressions of grief that are often referred to as examples of cultural continuity in and across the Mediterranean. In the 1950s, anthropologist Ernesto de Martino and his team assembled a unique set of photos and sound and film recordings on lament in Southern Italy in an attempt to verify that contemporary forms of mourning did not just resemble ancient funerary laments but were actual relics thereof. Departing from these audio-visual materials, this essay traces recurring patterns and sequences of images and sounds related to lament in Southern Italy, arguing that the (female) body of the performers becomes the main medium of iconographic and choreographic reproduction by way of re-enacting and imitating lament in staged settings. Rather than studying the phenomenon of lament in itself (or its decline) or commenting on the continuity thesis, I focus on the mediatised transmission of corporeal expressions of lamenters by drawing on Aby Warburg’s concept of the “migration of images” (Bilderwanderung). I include artistic approaches and modes such as re-enactment, performance, and montage in my ethnographic study of ritual mourning and show that there is a repertory of ecstatic gestures transferred through command performances that is not concerned with “authentic” documentation. Instead, these gestures are there to be performed, individually reappropriated, and revived in situations of crisis to the present day.

As part of the German Research Foundation (DFG) – Collaborative Research Center 1187, “Media of Cooperation” at the University of Siegen in which cooperative practices are central, the Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT) focuses on the research supporting assistance for the individual researchers in the sub-projects dealing with their “research data - from production to long-term archiving”. The Center for Information and Media Technology (ZIMT) has been supporting media research in particular at the university for years. The multifaceted examination of cooperative media in the CRC 1187 lead to a collection of large and heterogeneous data sets in highly contextual collaborative relationships that need to be managed, which is a major challenge for a sustainable research data management. For the researchers at the CRC Researchers supportive research data infrastructures are needed to be developed. The poster shows various subject-specific and interdisciplinary requirements for research data management in the DFG-CRC 1187 (data, data analysis, tools, storage, etc.) and analyses them.

We examine intra-day market reactions to news in stock-specific sentiment disclosures. Using pre-processed data from an automated news analytics tool based on linguistic pattern recognition we extract information on the relevance as well as the direction of company-specific news. Information-implied reactions in returns, volatility as well as liquidity demand and supply are quantified by a high-frequency VAR model using 20 second intervals. Analyzing a cross-section of stocks traded at the London Stock Exchange (LSE), we find market-wide robust news-dependent responses in volatility and trading volume. However, this is only true if news items are classified as highly relevant. Liquidity supply reacts less distinctly due to a stronger influence of idiosyncratic noise. Furthermore, evidence for abnormal highfrequency returns after news in sentiments is shown.

In Studie II hingen Veränderungen in
Advanced age has been consistently linked to performance deterioration in cognitive tasks targeting the ability to mentally manipulate information. A growing body of literature suggests that regular physical exercise alleviates the adverse effects of age and helps to preserve cognitive and cerebral capacities in old age. The present dissertation investigated associations between changes in fitness and changes in cerebral and cognitive measures within a group of older adults who participated in an exercise intervention. Paper I shows that previously reported increases in hippocampal volume can be linked to exercise-induced changes in the underlying tissue microstructure. The participants who improved most in fitness showed most increments in hippocampal tissue density. Changes in tissue density were in turn positively associated with changes in hippocampal volume. This finding suggests
that volumetric changes result from an increase in the bulk of cell membranes, and not from a mere dilation of existing cells. In Paper II, changes in fitness were associated with changes
in the microstructure of a prefrontal white matter tract, namely the forceps minor. Likewise, changes in forceps minor microstructure were related to changes in a composite score of fluid cognitive abilities. This result indicates that changes in white matter microstructure may contribute to the beneficial effects of exercise on cognition. Paper III demonstrates that changes in fitness are positively correlated with changes in neural specificity, presumably an indirect marker of dopaminergic neuromodulation. In summary, findings from the present dissertation extend the literature on beneficial effects of exercise on age-related deterioration and add knowledge regarding the underlying mechanisms.

A recall campaign for commercial, orange flowering petunia varieties in spring 2017 caused economic losses worldwide. The orange varieties were identified as undeclared genetically engineered (GE)-plants, harboring a maize dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR, A1), which was used in former scientific transgenic breeding attempts to enable formation of orange pelargonidin derivatives from the precursor dihydrokaempferol (DHK) in petunia. How and when the A1 cDNA entered the commercial breeding process is unclear. We provide an in-depth analysis of three orange petunia varieties, released by breeders from three countries, with respect to their transgenic construct, transcriptomes, anthocyanin composition, and flavonoid metabolism at the level of selected enzymes and genes. The two possible sources of the A1 cDNA in the undeclared GE-petunia can be discriminated by PCR. A special version of the A1 gene, the A1 type 2 allele, is present, which includes, at the 3′-end, an additional 144 bp segment from the non-viral transposable Cin4-1 sequence, which does not add any functional advantage with respect to DFR activity. This unequivocally points at the first scientific GE-petunia from the 1980s as the A1 source, which is further underpinned e.g., by the presence of specific restriction sites, parts of the untranslated sequences, and the same arrangement of the building blocks of the transformation plasmid used. Surprisingly, however, the GE-petunia cannot be distinguished from native red and blue varieties by their ability to convert DHK in common in vitro enzyme assays, as DHK is an inadequate substrate for both the petunia and maize DFR. Recombinant maize DFR underpins the low DHK acceptance, and, thus, the strikingly limited suitability of the A1 protein for a transgenic approach for breeding pelargonidin-based flower color. The effect of single amino acid mutations on the substrate specificity of DFRs is demonstrated. Expression of the A1 gene is generally lower than the petunia DFR expression despite being under the control of the strong, constitutive p35S promoter. We show that a rare constellation in flavonoid metabolism—absence or strongly reduced activity of both flavonol synthase and B-ring hydroxylating enzymes—allows pelargonidin formation in the presence of DFRs with poor DHK acceptance.

This dissertation aims to explore on how the limit of the modern rationality can be overcome. Firstly, the author attempts to find a clue in Kant’s aesthetic Gemeinsinn, which is reviewed text-immanent. As a result, the taste is a social reality which should be cultivated unceasingly. Secondly, the aesthetic rationality of Adorno and Habermas is investigated. Based on Adorno’s aesthetic rationality, it is claimed, that Adorno’s utopian conception is the realization of the conciliation through the aesthetic rationality, and it has to accept the aspect of communication and solidarity, if it is willing to attain reality in every-day life. On the contrary Habermas’ aesthetic rationality does not aim for the judgment of artworks, but for the reason for the judgment of artworks. From this point of view, Habermas does not share Kant’s question, whereupon individual-subjective judgments of taste or aesthetic judgments can achieve universality. Habermas’ aesthetic rationality is thus a mere rationality which lacks of authentic aesthetic experience. Finally, the author suggests that the rationality of taste can be found immanent in the text of Kant and interpreted as Kant’s aesthetic rationality. This rationality can be developed beyond the aesthetic and further to the emotional rationality. A rationality, which is interpreted in such a way, is a practical rationality, whereby one considers his own feelings and those of others on the basis of something emotional, and which can be grasped from the standpoint of communication and solidarity.

The fundamental aspects of the chemical reactions at surfaces can be elucidated by using well-defined model systems under the controlled conditions provided by vacuum-based techniques. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) as one of the crucial materials in modern technological applications, including microelectronics, photonics, and catalysis, has been subjected to numerous studies in order to rationalize relationships between the atomic structure and functional properties of silica-based materials. This work marks the attempt to understand interaction of ambient gases with a well-ordered, ultrathin silicate film grown on a Ru(0001) substrate. Using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD), hydroxo species, primarily in the form of isolated silanols (Si-OH), were identified on pristine silicate films. Isotopic experiments demonstrated that surface hydroxyls form primarily from the water molecules. Silanols do not undergo scrambling with the lattice oxygen atoms upon dehydroxylation. Steps on a silicate sheet and/or “holes” in these ultrathin films are proposed as active sites for hydroxylation. Adsorption of gases such as CO, H2 and O2 at elevated pressures revealed a more complex behavior. It involves gas transport through the pores, associated with structural defects in the silicate film, subsequent adsorption, and diffusion across the Ru(0001) surface underneath. During this intercalation, the silicate film stays intact even under high pressure (~10 mbar) and high temperature conditions (~900 K). The silicate layer does however strongly passivate the Ru surface towards RuO2(110) formation that readily occurs on bare Ru(0001) under the same conditions. Such a hybrid system, which combines a robust silica “membrane” and a chemically active metal underneath, could become an interesting material for technological applications, in particular in catalysis, sensors and anti-corrosion applications.

This dissertation explores economic sanctions in an empirical political economy context. While consisting of three independent papers, it aims at providing a holistic understanding of the motivation and effects of sanctions in particular, and the interplay between economic incentives and political goals in general. My research delineates the economic constraints that policymakers encounter in the field of international relations.

Literature analysing the interrelation of religion and economic performance suggests religion to explain differences in household income. Religious communities foster economically conducive attitudes and are important sources of social capital, particularly under weak economic structures. This paper targets at investigating effects of religiosity on rural household income using survey data from Greater Sekhukhune in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Using insights from religious studies within a conceptual framework of rural household decision-making, the authors estimate an income equation that includes measures for religious affiliation. While church membership per se does not reveal a significant effect on household income, the results show a positive and robust relationship for membership in the Zion Christian Church and the practice of African traditional religion.

Higher-spin theories have received significant attention over the last years. This is because they arise as the bulk duals of comparatively tractable conformal field theories. The only known interacting higher-spin theories were constructed by Vasiliev and are formulated in a highly non-standard way in terms of an infinite number of auxiliary fields. This thesis extracts physics out of Vasiliev theory. We study in detail its interactions, spectrum and locality properties. We consider both the three- and four-dimensional case. Our work represents the first systematic study of Vasiliev theory at the interacting level (in terms of physical fields only).

We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median
). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between
and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGNs and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. In keeping with previous SDSS policy, SDSS-IV provides regularly scheduled public data releases; the first one, Data Release 13, was made available in 2016 July.

The non-conventional yeast Pichia pastoris (syn. Komagataella phaffii) has become a powerful eukaryotic expression platform for biopharmaceutical and biotechnological applications on both laboratory and industrial scales. Despite the fundamental role that artificial transcription factors (ATFs) play in the orthogonal control of gene expression in synthetic biology, a limited number of ATFs are available for P. pastoris. To establish orthogonal regulators for use in P. pastoris, we characterized ATFs derived from Arabidopsis TFs. The plant-derived ATFs contain the binding domain of TFs from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, in combination with the activation domains of yeast GAL4 and plant EDLL and a synthetic promoter harboring the cognate cis-regulatory motifs. Chromosomally integrated ATFs and their binding sites (ATF/BSs) resulted in a wide spectrum of inducible transcriptional outputs in P. pastoris, ranging from as low as 1- to as high as ∼63-fold induction with only small growth defects. We demonstrated the application of ATF/BSs by generating P. pastoris cells that produce β-carotene. Notably, the productivity of β-carotene in P. pastoris was ∼4.8-fold higher than that in S. cerevisiae, reaching ∼59% of the β-carotene productivity obtained in a S. cerevisiae strain optimized for the production of the β–carotene precursor, farnesyl diphosphate, by rewiring the endogenous metabolic pathways using plant-derived ATF/BSs. Our data suggest that plant-derived regulators have a high degree of transferability from S. cerevisiae to P. pastoris. The plant-derived ATFs, together with their cognate binding sites, powerfully increase the repertoire of transcriptional regulatory modules for the tuning of protein expression levels required in metabolic engineering or synthetic biology in P. pastoris.

The object of this study was to analyse the eco-stability and capacity of different winter rye and winter wheat varieties under differentiated environmental conditions in the Brandenburg region. This paper shows and discusses a methodical procedure to support the selection and recommendation of varieties with an optimised assessment pattern. Then the paper covers special aspects on climatic changes and the selection of varieties on agricultural operations in the north-eastern region of Germany. Based on results from variety trials at multiple environments in Brandenburg and using bio statistical parameters, different varieties of rye and wheat were analysed. The evaluation of yield capacity and stability includes following parameters: eco-valence, eco-regression and floating checks. Then different impact factors on variability of yield were estimated, and the reaction of varieties to different weather conditions was analysed according to the climatic water balance. The results of the different tests showed that the yield performance is determined by different environmental factors and by variety. Of winter rye the hybrid varieties compared to other variety types were considerably more capable of yield and in tendency more stable in yield, especially also under dry weather conditions. Of winter wheat the A-varieties in tendency realized more stable yields while there was little difference between the varieties of the different quality groups. The experimental data base was supplemented by an empiric study on the selection of varieties in the German region of Brandenburg which includes interviews with experts as well as a polling of the standard practice in agricultural operations. Under the empiric study the interviewed farmers said when selecting varieties they would pay particular attention to yield safety, dryness tolerance and yield capacity.

The assessment of core executive functions (EFs; i.e., inhibition, working memory, cognitive flexibility) has often been presented as a diagnostic tool for evaluating cognitive functions in recent publications. For example, EFs are essential in soccer because players must quickly adapt, change strategies, and inhibit responses in rapidly changing game situations. Previous research has shown relations between (subjectively rated) game performance and the EFs of soccer players. Nevertheless, the previous studies’ samples were heterogeneous in their performance level (experts vs. amateurs), and the ratings were rather unsystematic (no validated rating protocol). Therefore, the current study aimed to predict soccer players’ game performance (i.e., systematically rated by coaches) with the help of EF performance. Therefore, we assessed the game performance (small-sided game, Game Performance Assessment Instrument [GPAI]) and EFs (inhibition: flanker task; working memory: 3-back task; cognitive flexibility: number-letter task) of 94 male soccer players (12–19 years old) from Germany’s highest competitive level. Multiple regression model results indicate that inhibition (i.e., flanker effect) and calendar age explain ~18% of players’ game performance variance. Results have to be interpreted with regard to the age-dependency of game performance and EFs. In conclusion, even though the results are based on a cross-sectional study, it appears that calendar age needs to be considered when assessing EFs.

This paper argues that the Sahara can be approached as a region following Horden and Purcell’s (2000) suggestions for the Mediterranean. Or at least, that this is true in economic and ecological terms. Internally, however, Saharan connectivity tends to be expressed in terms of genealogies, kinship and alliance, which implies moral evaluation of a kind that Horden and Purcell’s model is less able to capture. This becomes especially apparent with regard to the classification of Saharan settlements. From an ecological point of view, it might be meaningless to describe them as either towns or villages. From a moral point of view and in terms of self-definition, however, their classification matters greatly, in practical as much as representational terms. Moral aspirations emerge as an integral part of human ecologies.

The spectrum of terahertz (THz) emission in gases via ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses is analyzed by means of a semi-analytic model and numerical simulations in 1D, 2D and 3D geometries taking into account propagation effects of both pump and THz fields. We show that produced THz signals interact with free electron trajectories and thus significantly influence further THz generation upon propagation, i.e., make the process inherently nonlocal. This self-action contributes to the observed strong spectral broadening of the generated THz field. We show that diffraction of the generated THz radiation is the limiting factor for the co-propagating low frequency amplitudes and thus for the self-action mechanism in 2D and 3D geometries.

A hallmark of adaptive immunity is the clonal selection and expansion of cells with somatically diversified receptors and their long-term maintenance as memory cells. The innate immune system, in contrast, is wired to rapidly respond to pathogens via a broad set of germline-encoded receptors, acquiring epigenetic imprinting at the population level. The presented work challenges this paradigm by studying Natural Killer (NK) cell memory to human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection as an example of pathogen-specific adaptation within the innate immune system. Leveraging single-cell multi-omic maps of ex vivo NK cells and somatic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations as endogenous barcodes, we reveal drastic clonal expansions of adaptive NK cells in HCMV+ individuals. NK cell clonotypes were characterized by a convergent inflammatory memory signature driven by AP1 transcription factor activity, superimposed on a private set of clone-specific accessible chromatin regions. Strikingly, NK cell clones were stably maintained in their specific epigenetic states for up to 19 months, revealing that clonal inheritance of chromatin accessibility shapes the epigenetic memory repertoire. Together, this work presents the first identification of clonal expansion and persistence within the human innate immune system, suggesting these central mechanisms of immune memory have evolved independently of antigen-receptor diversification.

This work investigates the water level data measured in 18 stations around the German Bight from 1953 to 2006. It is the most useful hydrometric data to measure a water body and to do a forecasting for specific extreme risks. Our water level data are both temporal and spatial. We apply first stochastic time series models to the data on temporal level. The model has four patterns: trend, seasonality, autoregressive components and the heteroscedastic residuals captured by a dynamics conditional volatility model. Two different procedures are applied in this work to model the conditional mean dynamics. After the comparison of the empirical results from all procedures, we get the residuals from the "best" approach. Afterwards we adopt the spatial analysis to the residuals on each day, in order to interpolate for the unobserved locations. Different variogram and Kriging models are applied and compared.

In this work, a fundamental framework for the understanding of photovoltaic charge generation at metal-oxide/organic hybrid interfaces is established. It is shown that hybrid charge transfer states (HCTS) play a crucial role in the power conversion process. Prior to full charge separation, pairs of electrons and holes situated at opposite sides of the heterojunction remain bound to each other by Coulomb interaction. Only if an HCTS is dissociated, a contribution to a photocurrent can be made.
Planar heterojunctions of the material combinations ZnO/P3HT, ZnMgO/P3HT, and SnO2/P3HT serve as model systems for a broad investigation of interface energetics, photovoltaic power conversion and the loss processes therein. It is shown that an HCTS consists of an electron in the conduction band of the metal-oxide and a hole in the HOMO of the polymer. Consequently, its formation is an intrinsic property of all heterojunctions of that kind.
Electroluminescence (EL) spectroscopy proves to be a powerful tool in the analysis of HCTS. Their radiative recombination produces a broad signal in the near-infrared spectral range. Voltage-dependent EL measurements reveal a high degree of delocalization of both carriers in an HCTS, whereas EL spectra recorded over a wide range of temperatures show that non-radiative processes are by far the dominant recombination channel for HCTS at room temperature.
A multistep model of the charge generation process is derived from temperature-dependent photovoltaic measurements. It becomes apparent that the binding energy of electron and hole in an HCTS does not impose a significant limitation on device performance. The strong presence of non-radiative decay processes, however, causes severe losses for all material systems that are investigated in this work.
