Architekturausstellung im Außenraum
As an art museum, the Berlin Gallery aims to realise architectural projects and exhibits that lie somewhere between the fields of visual arts and architecture. A contemporary architectural position suited to its locality should characterize the museum, while the role of the museum itself and the medium of exhibition should be questioned. Its projects don’t have to be confined to the museum’s conventional exhibition space. Some structures near the museum built for the international architectural fair in 1987 (Internationale Bauausstellung, IBA) have been readily declared part of and annexed to the museum’s area of activity. Providing information about architecture in its surroundings has become a substantial part of the museum’s work, much like external projects that it commissions, which can be of permanent or temporary nature.

digital born architecture
The Kunstbibliothek (Art Museum Library) interprets and collects architecture as a multi-media communication system. The scientific indexing and digital networking of visual and textual sources takes place in cooperation with archives, libraries and research institutions. Sustainable strategies for collecting and storing “digital born architecture” are missing. This is where the Kunstbibliothek sees an urgent need to close the gap.

History of DAM
The Museum for German Architecture (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main turned 30 years old in June 2014. The anniversary was commemorated by an exhibition by curator Oliver Elser focusing on the founding of the museum and its early years. The museum’s founding director, Heinrich Klotz, recorded audio notes from 1979 to 1987. This unique source shows the history of DAM and the city of Frankfurt in a new light, and Klotz as an energetic champion and collector for his museum, always equal to the great architects of his time.

SAAI (Architekturarchiv Baden-Württemberg)
The Southwest German Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering (saai) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a collection of building and architectural related material founded by the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is mainly dedicated to the preservation of collections of notable architects. In spite of its limited resources, saai has become one of the largest and most important archives of its kind in Germany, due greatly to the synergistic effect its link to universities offers. The facility’s success with its research projects and exhibitions, however, has led KIT to doubt it can provide the necessary infrastructure.

Architekturzeichnung im Forschungskontext
Architectural drawings are much more mobile compared to their constructed counterparts. As media representations of planning ideas or pictures of real architectural structures, they have been collected, exchanged or copied. Lineamenta aims to use the possibilities offered by digital formats and by the internet to resolve the spatial distribution of the works. The goal is to offer study conditions that at once not only compare to studying an original [work], but also allow for direct comparison [with other works]. In order to comprehend the drawings in their complete historical environment, for example their relationship to building projects, the semantic data model ZUCCARO was developed, which also integrates the objects in the research context.

The Tchoban Foundation’s Museum for Architectural Drawing is the first museum dedicated to the art of hand drawn architectural sketches. It was opened in its own building, the Berliner Pfefferberg-Gelände, in June 2013 and to date has shown nine exhibitions, four in-house. In addition to holding exhibitions and related events, it is the foundation’s goal to promote young talent and to bring the genre of architectural drawing to a broader public.

Architekturgeschichte ausstellen
The Museum of Architecture in Wrocław is the only museum institution in Poland dedicated to the history of architecture. Founded in 1965, it is housed in a gothic monastery whose history plays a large part in defining the character of the museum. While its historical setting is accessible to the public, it lacks a modern exhibition space, creating the need for a newly constructed addition to the building. Several departments handle acquisition and item description. The museum produces programmes and events addressed to professional architects, historians and to the general public. The Department of Education plays an important part, preparing workshops, lectures and other events. The modernised museum website will soon make the collection available online and facilitate e-learning.

Autorenschaft des Entwurfs
Although the Archive for Architecture and the Department of Building History and Preservation of Historical Monuments form separate units of the Faculty for Architecture at the University of Innsbruck, they share the same management. This organizational structure allows the two departments to look for common subject matter in their academic work, and then to cover the topics from different perspectives. The subject of a recent architecture study seminar was the transition from analog to digital. This not only represents a major change for design itself, but also for the issue of design authorship, which should not be ignored in the research of architectural history.

Im Banne der Digitalisierung

Digital Humanities
Architektursammlung
digitales Vorlass-System
In the age of Digital Humanities, architectural collections are faced with the challenge of digitizing analog paper documentation, publishing documentation online, and backing up some two decades of existing digital architectural heritage. The author proposes that collections handle these challenges by defining clear profiles and definitive collection concepts, in other words that they be approached as a composite. Based on a literary inheritance, he discusses the difficulties of safeguarding so-called “born digital” documents. He suggests systematically expanding the collection and indexing strategies to include the new electronic sources and using a “digital legacy system” to prepare the incorporation of such documents in cooperation with the architects at an early stage.

mobiles Architekturmuseum
Netzwerkknoten
From the beginning, the concept of M:AI was to be mobile. Without its own building or any fixed exhibition space, M:AI travels throughout the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) and beyond. In its early years, M:AI’s task was to motivate and support museums and institutions in NRW to show exhibits on current architectural and engineering topics. Furthermore, M:AI serves as a hub for all of those involved in the state’s construction projects. This approach recognized that M:AI would be financed by the Ministry for Building, Housing, Urban Development and Transportation, giving the museum a clear governmental task: to promote architecture in NRW and encourage debate of current architectural and city planning topics.
